The coffee shrub is grown throughout tropical regions of the world and produces a fruit which, when ripe, contains two seeds which are referred to as coffee. The legend of the coffee shrub dates back to medieval times and tells of a Yemeni shepherd—whose goats had been running off more than usual—who noticed they had been eating the seeds of a mysterious small tree. Curious, the shepherd prepared an infusion with the seeds and discovered a delicious, invigorating drink with subtle aromas that would come to be universally known as coffee. For its healthy development, the small and delicate arabica coffee shrub needs to grow on a high plateau at an altitude of 800-1200m where temperatures do not fall below 15°C.
