This subshrub can reach 30-90cm in height and grows in tufts. Lemon balm is a perennial plant that is farmed or grows wild in the woods, alongside roadways, hedgerows and other cool areas. The plant has hairy stems toward the top and have rough, waffle-like leaves that emit a lemon scent. It has white or pink flowers which bloom in the summer and last until October. The Greek word for lemon balm, ‘melissa’ means ‘bee’. Which is quite the coincidence since bees love this plant’s flowers and after taking up their nectar, make a delicious honey. Used since Antiquity as a medicinal plant, lemon balm helps treat a variety of issues including digestive and nerve troubles. It promotes sleep and helps fight stress. Studies confirm that the plant helps promote relaxation, diminishes stress and anxiety.
