Gorse

Gorse is a thorny, evergreen, perennial shrub that grows to 1 to 2 m in height. Very rich in proteins and nitrogen, it is a pioneer species renowned for its resilience, competitiveness and energizing effect on its environment. A single plant can produce several thousand seeds per year, which may remain viable for more than 20 years. They are hard, resistant to water and characterized by their ability to germinate after fire disturbance. They are capable of growing on fire-damaged, uneven land as well as on nutrient- or acid-poor soil. Gorse also plays a role in the ecosystem. It serves as a source of nourishment for insects and honey production: bees come and look for nectar and pollen. It also helps birds, butterflies and other insects build nests which contributes to a more beautiful biodiversity.
